The deck is cored
Even boats with solid hulls generally have cored decks — plywood, balsa, foam or composite board between two thin skins.
A screw only bites the outer skin
In cored fiberglass a self-tapper holds in the top layer alone. Through-bolting is preferred, and the published method is to overdrill roughly twice the fastener diameter through skin and core, then backfill with thickened epoxy.
Then water goes in by itself
Water enters deck penetrations by capillary action through very small fissures, and “the capillary effect has the ability to generate a flow of water far greater than the usual gravity effect.”
And under the bow deck is your rod locker
The underside of that deck is the locker ceiling. A fastener coming through lands where the rods slide, next to the trolling-motor cable and the wiring.

A Sea-Dog flush mount accommodates containers up to 2-7/8 inches. Attwood’s standard recessed holder mounts in the same 3-inch hole. A Stanley 40 oz Quencher is 3.1 inches at the base, and YETI states its 25, 35 and 42 oz straw mugs need a holder of at least 3 inches. That is the gap that sends people looking in the first place.

Ours flexes to 3.15 inches, which covers the Stanley and does not cover everything. The checker below will tell you which.

If your boat does have a rail you are happy to clamp, a clamp-on is a good product and it stays put better than this does. This is for the carpet.

OMG!!!!! YOU HAVE TO BUY THESE!!!!!! i tested it out today on an old tv tray (wood and very slippery) and put a soda in it and played like “oops i bumped my tray” (and really hard) and NADA, NOPE, NOT AN INCH OF MOVEMENT from the STEADI. everything else went flying!!! cuz dummy me didn’t remove those other items first 🙃 duh!!! and no it was not suctioned to my tray cuz it doesn’t do that. but WOW!!!!! what a great invention. wish i was thinking up this GREAT IDEA, instead of binge watching TRAITORS tv shows and SPILLING my soda as i jump with excitement/anger over the show. the plus side, while flipping thru FB (while the commercial is on) or i’m cleaning up my spilt soda 🤪….. i saw this ad and it was like angels were singing “BUY ME AND UR PRAYERS ARE ANSWERED”. so glad i did. they work great!!! i bought the 4ct from actual website and it shipped quick and packaging was perfect. all 4 colors are great!! black, white, deep terracotta (plant holder) color. very very nice color. especially during the fall. and a muted warm sage color. very nice also. —The limits, in one place

What it does not do.

It holds through ordinary movement. A 70 mph hole shot is not ordinary.
The maker has watched an empty can — the lightest, worst case — hold in over forty miles an hour of wind, and a customer on a boat reports the same thing, unprompted, in the reviews below. Ordinary movement it handles well. But a 2025 Vexus VXs21 tested at 70 mph and got on plane in just under five seconds: nothing loose survives that, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Stow it for the run, the same as everything else on the deck.
It does not attach to the boat.
No clamp, no bracket, no suction, no adhesive. There is no accessory that would add one. If you want the drink secured while you run, a flush-mounted holder is the product that does that and this is not.
The category’s own published limit applies to us too.
Free-standing holders “can slide or tip in rough seas.” That is published by somebody selling against us and it is fair. Rough seas are not the same as ordinary movement, and we are not going to pretend it says less than it says.
A handled mug does not seat.
The handle lands where the fins grip.
It is not spill-proof — nothing is.
It resists tipping. A hard enough knock moves anything.

Scott Rodriguez made the first one after a full drink went over on a soft cushion with three kids under three in the house. It was built for spills.

It was not designed for boats, and nobody with a bass boat asked for this page. It exists because a wide base does the same thing on carpet as it does on a couch, and because everything it does not do on the water is written above.

Straight answers.

Will it stay put while I’m running to the next spot?

Not at bass-boat speed. It holds well through ordinary movement — the maker has seen an empty can hold in over forty miles an hour of wind — but these boats plane in about five seconds and run to 70. Stow it for the run, the same as everything else on the deck.

Will it hold on carpet?

Yes — carpet is a high-friction surface and the base plants on it. Carpet is also exactly why suction mounts are not an option here: they need a smooth, non-porous panel and are rated 3 lb on textured surfaces.

Can I clamp it to the pedestal?

No. There is no clamp on it and nothing sold separately would add one. It also means there is no pedestal diameter to match — the clamp-on holders come in 1-1/2 and 1-3/4 inch, and plenty of pedestals are 2-3/8.

Will it hold my 40 oz Stanley?

Yes. The Quencher H2.0 40 oz is 3.1 inches at the base and the fins flex to 3.15, so it seats with a push rather than dropping in. That is also the size your factory holder will not take — a Sea-Dog flush mount accommodates up to 2-7/8.

Is it a rod-holder insert?

No. It does not go in a tube, and on a bass boat that is just as well — the rods lie flat in lockers, so there is often no tube to use.

Will it damage the carpet or the gelcoat?

It marks nothing and lifts clean. There is no adhesive, no suction and no hardware touching the boat.

Can it live in the boat all season?

Shore 85A TPU, and water does not hurt it. Long-term UV exposure is not something we have tested, so we do not make a claim about it. Rinse and wipe, or run it through the dishwasher.

Then drill for a flush mount, and do it properly — through-bolted, overdrilled and backfilled. It is a real answer and it stays with the boat. This one does not compete with it.
